The Struggle of Peter (Part 3)
The days grew dark, as shadows fell wide,
And the path of Christ stretched too long, too wide.
We had walked in His footsteps, witnessed the divine,
But within my soul, there lingered a sign—
A trembling doubt, a fear unforeseen,
That not all was as it had seemed.
He had warned us, spoke of trials ahead,
Of suffering, betrayal, and the blood He would shed.
But I, Peter, bold and unshaken in pride,
Swore I would stand, with none to divide
My heart from His, through fire or flame—
I’d never deny, I’d never be the same.
“Lord, I will follow, wherever You go,
Even to death, through the high and the low.”
But He looked at me, His eyes full of pain,
“Before the rooster crows, you’ll deny Me in vain.
Three times you’ll falter, and the night will be long—
Your faith will be tested, your courage too strong.”
I laughed, the words seemed foreign, untrue,
For how could I falter when my heart was so true?
But little did I know, the storm that would come,
The weight of the world would fall on Him alone.
For the night grew heavy, and the hours stretched thin,
And I watched, helpless, as the trial would begin.
The soldiers came, with torches ablaze,
And with them, betrayal, in cruel display.
Judas, the one who had walked by our side,
Now led them forth, with nothing to hide.
They seized Him, bound Him, took Him away,
And all we had followed seemed lost in the fray.
I ran, I fled, with my heart full of fear,
For the Man who had called me now seemed unclear.
Was He truly the Christ, the One to save?
Or was He a prisoner, too weak to be brave?
I could not bear the weight of this strife,
The weight of the cross, the price of this life.
And then it happened, that fateful night—
I stood by the fire, my heart full of fright.
A servant girl came, her gaze full of doubt,
“Were you not with Him? The Nazarene, the one about?”
My heart stuttered, my mind was unclear,
“I do not know Him,” I whispered in fear.
The flames crackled, the wind howled low,
And again, they asked, “You were with Him, we know.”
But I denied, my words a lie—
“I do not know the man, nor can I testify.”
The shame, the guilt, it burned deep in my soul,
As I looked upon Him, now near to His goal.
A third time, the voices came to me,
The question, the truth—I could not flee.
And I swore, by the heavens and the earth,
“I do not know Him, nor the place of His birth.”
And then the rooster crowed, the sound like a sword,
It pierced my heart—my denial, my Lord.
I turned, and the gaze of Christ met my eyes,
And in that moment, I saw my demise.
His eyes, filled with sorrow, yet understanding so deep,
Spoke words I could not keep.
The shame I felt, the weight of my sin,
Was greater than the storm that raged within.
I wept, bitterly, as the tears did flow,
For the One I had failed, the One I let go.
How could I face Him after such shame?
How could I return, when I’d brought Him such blame?
I ran to the shadows, my soul torn apart,
The agony of guilt tore at my heart.
But the struggle did not end, nor the pain fade,
For in the silence, His presence stayed.
I felt the weight of His grace, though unearned,
And in my despair, my spirit burned.
For He knew my weakness, my fear, my sin—
And still, He called me to rise again.
